Old Cats

Directed by Sebastián Silva & Pedro Peirano2010Chile89 mins

From award-winning filmmakers Pedro Peirano and Sebastián Silva (The Maid) comes Old Cats, a wickedly delicious chamber drama about a family marinating in its own problems.

Isadora and Enrique, an elderly couple, live a comfortable life with their two ample cats in a handsome high-rise apartment overlooking the park. Isadora is struggling with a bout of dementia when her daughter, Rosario, and her butch female lover, Hugo, drop in for a coked-up visit to pitch their latest get-rich scheme—and attempt to snatch the flat right out from under Isadora. Isadora does something quite unexpected for a woman with a busted hip, and everything changes.

Drawing pitch-perfect performances from a brilliant cast, Silva and Peirano have crafted a splendid film filled with the pathos and black humor found in treacherous mother-daughter relationships. Old Cats points a way to how empathy may lead to survivable neutral ground.
