Unhappy Birthday

Directed by Mark Harriott & Mike Matthews2010UK89 mins

Set in and around the remote tidal island of Amen, Unhappy Birthday is the fictional story of three outsiders’ battles against the twisted morals of an antiquated and isolated community. Inspired by British cult classics such as The Wicker Man and Hammer House of Horror, the film explores the fear of isolation and nature versus nurture.

The island of Amen is accessible only by invite and seemingly impossible to leave. What could be a better birthday spot for city girl Sadie, who happens to be scared of water? Her boyfriend Rick and friend Johnny feel a connection themselves, and all relationships are up in the air as they reach Amen. After an unexpected and shocking fumigation given to all visitors by the islanders, they finally meet some friendly locals, including Corinne. A mysterious family connection with this enigmatic islander brings horrific consequences as they find themselves trapped by the tide and at the mercy of the island’s wild nature.

An unsettling ride from beginning to end, horror buffs and fans of psychological thrillers shouldn’t miss this unique story. Bring someone you can trust—you might not want to go out into the dark alone.
