An ode to the love of movies, Una película barata (literally A Cheap Film) is a beguiling dramedy about a gay man in the middle of an existential crisis who meets a wild card friend from his childhood who will shape the course of his summer.
Fede (Enrique Gimeno) is going through a transitional period in his life. He's broken up with his boyfriend and taken leave of his job to figure out what's next. Spending his afternoons alone in the park, he runs into Iván (Jorge Motos) whom he recognizes from going to his house as a child. Unbeknownst to Fede, seeing Iván again will direct the course of both of their summers in unpredictable ways.
With dashes of forgotten Meg Ryan movies of the 90s, classic Pedro Almodóvar humor, and Mondays in the Sun crossed with unexpected flares of Jean Vigo and Andrea Arnold, Una película barata is a wildly inventive feature debut from Spanish director Osama Chami (Young Diego, Frameline45). Aided by funny and striking performances, Chami takes us on an eye-opening, consistently surprising journey where two lost souls try to help one another find their paths, or at least entertain each other while looking for it.
