Celebrate the life and legacy of Del Martin in Debra Chasnoff’s newest documentary. Whether or not you were at City Hall on the momentous day of Martin’s civil memorial service, this film shares the eloquence and joy of the event. Starting with a processional from Sistah Boom, this extraordinary event almost captures the spirit of this extraordinary individual. The symbolism of a rainbow flag raised alongside the stars and stripes speaks volumes about Martin’s impact on the LGBT community across the country—and across the world.
Chasnoff allows the service and shots of the crowd to speak for themselves. The diversity of the crowd testifies to Martin’s ability to bring people together. And to honor her passing, luminaries from our communities turned out in force. A veritable who’s who of the LGBT movement, particularly the lesbian rights movement, shares personal memories. Join Glide Memorial’s Rev. Cecil Williams, San Francisco Poet Laureate emeritus Jan Mirikitani, musician Holly Near, past president of NOW Aileen Hernandez, author Jewelle Gomez, singers Linda Tillery and Margie Adam, and NCLR Executive Director Kate Kendall. Political powerhouses are also in attendance, including former San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, California State Assembly Member Mark Leno, and former U.S. Ambassador James Hormel.
The day wasn’t lacking in inspiration for continued action. As Martin’s daughter, Kendra Mon, reminds us, “Mom was not an extraordinary person. She was a person who accomplished extraordinary things.”
