Frameline47 Films Coming to Theatres and Streaming

Hard to believe it’s been nearly a month since Frameline47 blasted off at the Castro Theatre! We know it’s impossible to catch everything at the Festival, even if you took the entire 11 days off, so we wanted to highlight some of the FL47 titles coming to Bay Area theatres and national streaming platforms in the coming weeks.

In Theatres

River Gallo in Every Body

Oscar-nominated director Julie Cohen’s illuminating intersex documentary Every Body — which received at Honorable Mention for Outstanding Documentary Feature at the Festival — is currently playing at the AMC Metreon and Landmark Opera Plaza from Focus Features.

Ben Platt & Molly Gordon in Theater Camp

Our US Narrative Centerpiece, Molly Gordon and Nick Lieberman’s uproarious Theater Camp begins a limited theatrical run on Friday, June 14th before it officially opens in San Francisco next Wednesday, the 19th via Searchlight Pictures. For anyone who came to our Castro Theatre screening, we don’t have to tell you how amazing it was to see together, as a community, in a giant theatre, so tell your friends (or just go see it again with them!).

Ayo Edibiri & Rachel Sennott in Bottoms

And since we’re on the subject of the most fun and unforgettable screenings at Frameline47… we implore you to see Emma Seligman’s instant classic Bottoms when it hits theatres (pun intended) in SF and around the country next month. There’s no chance anyone at our sold out screening caught all the hysterical rapid-fire jokes over that thunderous laughter. The Alamo Drafthouse’s advanced screening on August 22nd is already sold out, so it might be a good idea to grab tickets early before it officially opens on August 24th. Starring two of the year’s brightest stars, Ayo Edibiri (a scene-stealer in Theater Camp) and Rachel Sennott (who co-wrote the screenplay with Seligman), Bottoms is the raunchy, wild, tears-in-your-eyes funny queer high school comedy we’ve been waiting for.

Molly Gordon & Rachel Sennott in Shiva Baby

We’ve also got pre-game and afterparty recommendations for Bottoms. Utopia will be bringing Seligman’s debut feature Shiva Baby back to theatres next month ahead of the Bottoms release. Also starring Rachel Sennott (as well as Theater Camp co-director/actor Molly Gordon), Shiva Baby played at Frameline44 as part of 2020’s virtual program. Catch it August 15th at the Alamo Drafthouse (or stream it on Max or Kanopy now). And don’t forget to watch Director of Programming Allegra Madsen conduct a virtual Q&A with Seligman and Sennott on our YouTube channel when you’re all bottomed out.

Liyah Mitchell in Kokomo City

D. Smith’s Kokomo City will begin its limited theatrical run later this July—the 29th to be exact. On August 18, we will see two strong US narrative feature debuts from FL47 begin their limited theatrical releases: Vuk Lungulov-Klotz’s Mutt and Laura Moss’ birth/rebirth. IFC Films and Shudder just dropped the trailer for birth/rebirth this week, which you can check out here.

Jordan Firstman & Sebastián Silva in Rotting in the Sun

And the last two FL47 films with confirmed theatrical release dates will begin on September 9th: Sebastián Silva’s Rotting in the Sun and Aitch Alberto’s Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe. Rotting in the Sun will cruise into US theatres before becoming available to stream on MUBI starting September 14th.

Streaming

Taylor Mac in Taylor Mac's 24-Decade History of Popular Music

As of this week, 6 features from the Frameline47 program are available to stream from home through a few different platforms. Both produced through HBO, Stephen Kijak’s Rock Hudson: All That Heaven Allowed and Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman’s Taylor Mac’s 24-Decade History of Popular Music can be found on the newly-titled Max platform.

Casa Susanna

Following its week-long run at the Roxie, João Pedro Rodrigues’ musical fantasia Will-o’-the-Wisp is streaming exclusively on Criterion Channel in the US. Sébastien Lifshitz’s Casa Susanna aired on the PBS program American Experience days after the Festival wrapped. You can now stream it through the PBS website/apps.

Paul Kircher & Vincent Lacoste in Winter Boy

Head over to MUBI to watch Zaida Carmona’s quirky lesbian comedy Girlfriends & Girlfriends and Christophe Honoré’s semi-autobiographical Winter Boy. MUBI also has a number of former Frameline titles to stream as a part of their Pride Unprejudiced: LGBTQ+ Cinema collection. Among their vast library of films, you can find these Frameline46 highlights: Amanda Kramer’s Please Baby Please starring Oscar nominee Andrea Riseborough; C.B. Yi’s Moneyboys; Elene Naveriani’s Wet Sand; and Éri Sarmet’s A Wild Patience Has Taken Me Here.

Kiah McKirnan in Perpetrator

And lastly, Jennifer Reeder’s campy horror flick Perpetrator will be available to stream through Shudder starting on September 1st. We’ll try to post periodic updates like this when more films announce their theatrical release dates or become streamable through any of the platforms.
