An age-gap romance, a road trip that ends in a rain-soaked kiss, and desert vistas scored by Patsy Cline and Ella Fitzgerald hits — Donna Deitch’s landmark 1985 romantic drama has it all. Desert Hearts, a perennial Festival favorite, returns to Frameline in celebration of the film’s recent 40th anniversary.
Based on Jane Rule’s 1964 novel, the beloved lesbian classic centers on Vivian Bell (a perfectly cast Helen Shaver), an uptight New York professor who moves to Reno to finalize a quick divorce — only to have a life-changing run-in with free-spirited sculptor Cay Rivvers (an ever-charming Patricia Charbonneau). Vivian and Cay’s fast friendship deepens, pushing the soon-to-be-divorcée to reevaluate herself and her future. Brimming with yearning, seduction, and some of queer cinema’s most memorable lines, there’s a reason Deitch’s period-piece romance remains the blueprint for so many subsequent sapphic classics.
