Pooja, Sir

Directed by Deepak Rauniyar2024Nepal/USA/Norway115 mins

A gripping procedural inspired by real events, Pooja, Sir delves into the intersections of gender, race, caste and sexuality, set against the turbulent backdrop of the 2015 protests in Nepal. At the heart of this story is Detective Inspector Pooja who lives in Kathmandu with her wife and aging father. When two young boys are kidnapped in Nepal, she’s contracted to investigate the matter further. But what begins as a straightforward case quickly spirals into something far more complex.

As Pooja navigates violent protests, political unrest, and entrenched discrimination against the Madhesi people — who make up one-third of Nepal's population — she finds herself up against forces she didn’t expect. Teaming up with Mamata, a local Madhesi policewoman, Pooja faces challenges not only in solving the case but also in confronting the deep-rooted misogyny and systemic bias that pervade the police force and society. As the investigation comes to a head, Pooja is faced with exposing the true realities of the crime that she is trying to solve.
