In this Teddy Award-winning animated comedy, The Pitt’s breakout star Shabana Azeez voices Saira, the film’s titular sapphic monarch-to-be. Painfully introverted, Saira is also unable to summon the Royal Labrys — the most powerful weapon in all of Clitopolis. That becomes an even bigger problem when Kiki (Bernie Van Tiel), the Saira’s annoyingly cool, pink-haired bounty hunter ex, is kidnapped by the Straight White Maliens.

Eager to prove herself (and win Kiki back), Saira sets off on a zany journey that brings her face-to-face with an incredibly problematic (space)ship (Richard Roxburgh), an assured gay-pop star (Gemma Chua Tran), and, of course, years of built-up self-doubt. Brimming with colors as bright as its gay in-jokes, and shades of offbeat animated romps like Adventure Time and Scott Pilgrim, writer-director duo Emma Hough Hobbs and Leela Varghese’s Lesbian Space Princess is a frenetic sci-fi-comedy musical that isn’t afraid to lez it all out.
