Four Mothers

Directed by Darren Thornton2024Ireland/UK89 mins

When his close circle of gay friends impulsively decides to escape to a destination gay pride event, they also dump their elderly mothers onto Edward’s shoulders. In this bawdy and heartwarming story of mothers and sons that won the Audience Award at the BFI London Film Festival, the trials of juggling self-care and caring for a loved one are told through a gay novelist and his non-verbal mother. Edward (Mare of Easttown and Ammonite’s James McArdle) is the author of a gay young adult novel, which becomes a sudden overseas sensation years after publication in his native Ireland. But between these successful moments, Edward has been the primary care for his older mother, Alma (played by the legendary Fionnula Flanagan) — and nurturing all of her demands has left him isolated.

As Edward struggles to balance the demands being placed on his career with the needs of these four erratic women — from meals to bedtime to an impromptu trip to visit a medium  — his own emotional needs come into focus.
