You always remember your first love. For Egghead, it’s his childhood BFF, the artistic and adorably quirky Twinkie. With the summer almost over and separate colleges looming, Egghead has only a few weeks left to tell her how he feels.

Oblivious to his love, Twinkie has her own problems. She is struggling with her racial identity and dealing with her adoptive parents’ disappointing reaction to her coming out. Let’s not mention the fact that the undeniable love of her life — the elusive yet very much online BD — lives over 500 miles away. When BD invites Twinkie to a huge lesbian party in Dallas, she eventually convinces Egghead to put his own feelings aside so the two BFFs can embark on an epic journey full of hilarious and cringe moments—and plenty of rest-stop slushies—along the way.

Using anime-inspired interludes and playful montages to great effect, Egghead & Twinkie offers us a familiar (but absolutely welcome!) mix of buddy movie and road flick — think Gypsy 83, crossed with The Half of It, and a dash of Booksmart — from a fresh perspective.
