Angel

Directed by Sebastiano d'Ayala Valva2011France65 mins

In Paris everyone knows her as ‘Mujeron’ (Big Woman) but her real name is Angel. A former boxer from Ecuador, Angel is now a transsexual prostitute in France. Her mission in life is to support her family back home. Now, after five years away, the time has come for her to see what her help has achieved. In her first trip home since she left Ecuador, Angel is confronted with the harsh reality of her country and an ambiguous relationship with her family. Angel is a compelling insight into the complexities of identity and economic struggle in Ecuador. But, above all, it is the touching story of a remarkable individual and her fight for justice and acceptance.

Irma is an intimate musical portrait of Irma Gonzalez, the former world champion of women's professional wrestling. Filmed in Ciudad Nezahualcoyotl—a notorious district of Mexico City—Irma shines a new light on gender in Mexico. Featuring music written and performed by Ms. Gonzalez, Irma's story surges with love and deceit, masculine strength, feminine charms, and an extraordinary sense of humor.
