Out of the Blue

Directed by Alain Tasma2008France90 mins

After 22 years of marriage, Marion has had enough. She’s discontented, frustrated and bored, and at the age of 45, she’s ready to start from scratch. With a sudden sense of inevitability, she leaves her marriage and strikes out on her own. It’s a surprising decision to her oblivious husband Paul and her naturally self-centered teen daughter Justine. But as her new life sweeps Marion headlong into a passionate love affair with a woman, she’s the one who gets the biggest surprise.

A beautiful young antiques dealer with a flair for flamenco, Claude is at first just a welcome new friend with a van full of furniture to loan. Soon, their deep connection becomes mutually undeniable, but for Marion, it’s not an easy transition. As she gradually comes to terms with her own emotional responses to this unexpected new side of her sexuality, the reactions of those around her become unpredictable and volatile. Tormented by the demons of a lost lover, Claude is prone to unexpected fiery outbursts.

No one ever said starting over would be easy for anyone else, either! Confused by the family fracture, Justine is at once rebellious and in desperate need of her mother’s love. With realism and charm, this sweetly satisfying French film pushes and pulls the characters as they evolve into who they’re meant to be. — JOANNE PARSONT
