Give in to the temptations of Babette? Live with Christophe? Marry Laurence? Let go of it all and follow his fantasies of Marc? Choices, decisions, commitments — these are what Alain (Pascal Greggory), the seductive forty-ish junior partner in a small Parisian law firm, fears and with remarkable ingenuity, avoids. Ambiguity and existential doubt, and confusion and chaos form the milieu of our protagonist's messy but not unhappy life.
Confusion of Genders moves quickly with witty, improvisational dialogue and fast repartee as complication builds upon complication and an unexpected turn of fate presents Alain with having to make an ultimate decision: Laurence (Nathalie Richard), the senior partner of the firm, discovers that she is pregnant with his child. Despite being practitioners of a profession that applies clear definitions and reaches final judgments, both Alain and Laurence find themselves comically befuddled by this predicament. Meanwhile, Babette (Julie Gayet), Christophe (Cyrille Thouvenin), and Marc (Vincent Martinez) await, all sexually involved with Alain or on the verge thereof. No lingering in doubt for them, they are young, unreflective, and willing to go wherever passion dictates.
