The heroine of this absurd comedy is Yolanda, a nightclub singer. After her boyfriend dies of an overdose, she flees from the police and finds refuge in a special convent that helps women of the street. The convent's inhabitants are an unusual mix of the bizarre and the extravagant: a heroin-addicted abbess who falls in love with Yolanda, a brainy romance author who writes under a pseudonym, another keeps a tiger in the convent courtyard, another is a fashion designer in love with the local priest. In this mad panopticon of characters, Pedro Almodóvar portrays an alternative world in which being different and crazy is neither outrageous nor a nuisance. On the contrary, in a peculiar community, everyone can find refuge, understanding, and strength for a new life.

From the director of Love and Death on Long Island, Alfalfa offers a witty and exuberantly punning queer dictionary, hell-bent on subverting the Queen’s English.
