As any long-time women’s sports fan (or player) will tell you, media accessibility is crucial to fostering lasting community and facilitating real-world change. For thirty years, the WNBA has been a league where players have leveraged their platforms to advocate for racial justice, equal pay, LGBTQ+ rights, and more. “As female athletes, [we’re] judged based on everything except the game we’re playing,” four-time WNBA champ Sue Bird notes. “It’s never just been about basketball.”

And that’s exactly why director Dawn Porter’s timely-yet-timeless documentary remains required viewing. Punctuated with interviews from some of the W’s most pivotal figures, including WNBA champ and President of the WNBA Players Association Nneka Ogwumike, former WNBA All-Star Layshia Clarendon, and reporters Jemele Hill and Holly Rowe, the film chronicles the W’s founding and the ever-present activism that came to a head when Senator Raphael Warnock challenged former senator (and Atlanta Dream co-owner) Kelly Loeffler.
