Benjamin

Directed by Simon Amstell2018UK85 mins

In this uproarious offbeat comedy, up-and-coming London filmmaker Benjamin (a note-perfect Colin Morgan, The Happy Prince) scrambles to put the finishing touches on his sophomore indie effort. It’s been way too many years since Benjamin’s first film made a splash (as everyone keeps reminding him), and under the pressure, Benjamin’s self-esteem takes a nosedive, along with his artistic judgment. But everything changes when he meets and falls for Noah (Phénix Brossard, Departure), an enchanting honey-voiced French musician, whose relaxed confidence couldn’t be more mismatched with Benjamin’s no-filter awkwardness. The healthier and more positive their relationship grows, the more unfamiliar it is to Benjamin, whose insecurities may finally torpedo his one chance at real happiness.

Loaded with crackling one-liners and ingenious sight gags, this remarkably assured first feature from writer-comedian Simon Amstell is imbued with palpable melancholic truths about love and art. The glowing cast of memorable side characters includes scene-stealing turns from Jessica Raine, Anna Chancellor, Joel Fry, and Game of Thrones’ Ellie Kendrick, and the stirring soundtrack spotlights original songs by James Righton of the UK band Klaxons.
