Rights and Wrongs

The wrongs that the LGBT community are currently fighting against are challenged in these inspiring films of protest and determination.

In The Preacher and the Poet, a Baptist minister’s infamous anti-gay sermon is juxtaposed with the words of poet Kenneth Morris, who recounts how his best friend, unable to cope with being gay, committed suicide at age 13. AIDS activists storm the Family Research Council to protest its opposition to condoms, sex education and science-based HIV prevention in That’s Unfortunate. In Chalk!, students protest a ban on sidewalk chalk at Wesleyan University by throwing — what else? — a rocking chalking party. Out Running: Stories from the Campaign Trail profiles three openly LGBT elected officials from across the country as they try to win their respective campaigns, including Judge Virginia Linder, who is looking to become not just the first lesbian, but the first woman on the Oregon Supreme Court. Frameline Completion Fund winner Freeheld follows the desperate battle of Lieutenant Laurel Hester, a dying New Jersey police officer who fights to transfer her pension to her domestic partner. On this nail-biting journey, Laurel loses her hair, her health, her badge and, ultimately, her life — but not before winning a historic court case witnessed around the world.
