Everything Happens to Me

Directed by Miquel García Borda2000Spain108 mins

An intimate group of friends pulls together a dinner party to welcome their mate Óscar back from a long visit to India. Neat-freak Ángel and sexy, slovenly Edu play hosts in their shared bachelor pad. The dinner guests include vivacious Elena, who talks too fast and a little too much, and her flatmates, Txell and Aina, a seemingly happy lesbian couple. Each character has an edge, but on the surface they all appear to be leading normal, contented lives. Óscar's return upsets the group's delicate balance. He ignores Elena's advances, driving her to fabricate elaborate rape scenarios to get attention. He courts Aina, propelling her to question her sexuality, and forces Edu to face his true feelings for Ángel.

Once the surface is scratched, each character's mask begins to crumble and those that can pass as normal are forced to choose between their outsider impulses and the safe world of the conformist. A sharp tongued comedy that mutates into a serious exploration of belonging, Everything Happens to Me questions appearances, peeling back the façades of its seemingly uncomplicated characters to reveal the hidden desires and identities underneath.
