The Long Weekend (o’despair)

Directed by Gregg Araki1989USA87 mins

Three Los Angeles, California, couples in their mid-twenties spend a weekend wandering the city’s night streets and hanging out in the apartment of their host, a failed filmmaker named Michael. Rachel and Greg announce they are ending their tentative engagement by getting married. Leah and Sara have been lovers for a while, but their relationship is fraying, and Michael’s ex-boyfriend, Alex, who left him six months earlier, has shown up uninvited and moved back in, despite his love for Sara. All six are well educated, self-absorbed, angst-ridden, and bored.

They argue, discuss the meaning of life, and “cruise” trendy Melrose Avenue. Ultimately, they admit to each other, if not completely to themselves, that they are too immature for relationships, feel like they are living in “bad _Partridge Family _reruns” on television, and are “all going mad.” By the end of their three-day weekend, their relationships have changed.
