On Monday, December 1, join us for a screening in honor of World AIDS Day at the Grand Lake Theatre in Oakland. Made possible by Gilead Sciences, our Presenting Sponsor, the event offers attendees the chance to see Marlon Riggs’ Affirmations and Stephen Winter’s Chocolate Babies, followed by a post-film conversation with representatives from Frameline, the Oakland LGBTQ Community Center, and more.

Chocolate Babies
Stephen Winter 1996 USA 83 min
Through a campaign of fabulous surprise attacks, an underground band of radical queer HIV+ activists, addicts, and drag queens take to the streets of New York City to combat conservative politicians and government apathy towards the AIDS crisis. A frenetic debut feature from writer/director Stephen Winter, Chocolate Babies (Frameline21) unleashes a world of anarchic camp and unapologetic Black queer power in one of the hidden gems of New Queer Cinema, ripe for rediscovery and ready to be introduced to new audiences.

Affirmations
Marlon T. Riggs 1990 USA 10 min
An exploration of Black gay male desires and dreams, Affirmations starts with an affectionate, humorous confessional and moves on to a wish for empowerment and incorporation.
Please Note: This event is free, but requires an RSVP. There is a suggested donation of $10, but more or less will be accepted.
