It Came From Kuchar is the hilarious and touching documentary about the legendary underground filmmakers George and Mike Kuchar. They made their first film at the age of 12 and were hooked. Alongside Andy Warhol and Kenneth Anger, the Kuchars were pioneering members of the 1960s New York underground film scene. Dubbed “the Mozarts of 8mm” they turned New York filmmakers on to their small gage wonders with a screening in Ken Jacob’s loft. Spreading depravity, humor and humanity with every production of epic proportions, the brothers Kuchar have influenced and inspired some of the most creative filmmakers of our time, as well as generations of students, cinephiles and weirdoes.
Mike’s Sins of the Fleshapoids (a seminal work of ’60s sci-fi, robot loving rebellion) and George’s Hold Me While I’m Naked (a beautiful tale told as the result of heartbreak induced by his lead actress catching pneumonia and being unable to complete shooting) brought their Hollywood-in-the-Bronx aesthetic to new heights and sent shockwaves through the underground.
Interviews with Buck Henry, John Waters, Guy Maddin, Atom Egoyan, B. Ruby Rich, Bill Griffith, Kuchar superstar Donna Kerness and Wayne Wang are shaped with archival footage and the brothers finishing each other’s sentences. This beautifully crafted film answers the age old question George once asked “There’s some things worth living for, isn’t there?” Yes indeed, all things Kuchar. — D.A. JOHNSTON
