The Lovers and Fighters Convention documents a significant event during the Tranfabulous Arts Festival in London. This energetic evening of performance began as a response to The United Kingdom’s Gender Recognition Act. Signed into law by Queen Elizabeth II in July 2004, the act gave transgender people the right to change gender on all legal forms, including birth certificates. Representing a human rights advance for some, the act also reinforces binary gender categories, excluding many who identify otherwise. Artists, performers, and composers joined forces to celebrate the existence of a rich culture of trans, preserving trans-ness endangered by limitations of officially recognized codes of being. — TEXAS STARR
