Magical Promise: Queer Women of Color Shorts
87 Minute Running Time
Program: Shorts
Curated by Madeleine Lim, these works were created through the Queer Women of Color Media Arts Project, which promotes the visibility of queer women of color through the creation, exhibition and distribution of films that reflect their life stories.
The Cock: Lesbian Owned & Operated is a Mexican lesbian’s heartfelt corrido to the Cock-a-Doodle Café in Oakland. Mashed, Boiled & Fried satisfies a hunger for tasty platanos and queer community. It’s Just Another Day for three Asian women who rock different sports. When Kelly’s work visa runs out, her partner does a tricky tap dance with government agents and compels us to Look Again at queer couples and immigration. When her mother leaves the Philippines to find work in the U.S., Magic waltzes around doubt and fear to find love in magic & the moon. A Chicana mother-daughter tango of shame and acceptance leads to mutual understanding in Queering My Mother. A queer, Black femme reveals her kink/fetish desires in Cut and Paste. The dynamic swagger of 007 Secret Asian J. Wong clashes with the brazen jiggle of her nemesis in Labels Are Forever. And an Asian/Black dyke family on a mission to conceive does a quick cha cha chase for that One in a Million.
