Since 2000, Michael T, Justine D, Johnny T and Georgie Seville have come together to put on the most exciting event in nightlife: Motherfucker. Motherfucker’s roots rest firmly in such ’90s clubs as avant queer Jackie 60 and the homo rock ’n’ roll club Squeezebox, which encouraged a mixed crowd and emphasized the significance and empowerment of women, trannies and queers in the scene. By blending decades of rock influences and bringing together the most outrageous people from gay and straight culture, these four co-conspirators reinvigorated the New York club scene after it spiraled into remission following its murderous and violent past.
Motherfucker: A Movie profiles the scene itself as well as the club’s promoters, a loving and sometimes feuding family headed by their “mother,” Michael T. Interviews cover everything from the nuances of the perfect music set to the hazards of a new venue and the realities of preferential treatment: “We don’t care what your look is, just work one,” comments Door Bitch Thomas Onorato. Performance footage intercuts with interviews featuring David Johansen and Sylvain Sylvain of the New York Dolls, Moby, Alan Cumming, The Juan MacLean, vogue icon Willie Ninja and many others, weighing in on how Motherfucker figures into the lineage of New York City nightclubbing.
Rob Sheffield of Rolling Stone put it best: “They take all of these different, decadent, seedy, polysexual New York traditions and make them explode together.” Motherfucker: A Movie will leave you with the sweetest hangover. — DENNIS CONROY
