Staff Pick: Mosquita y Mari

May 22, 2012

We're excited to kick off Frameline36 with a hand-picked staff recommendation from our Volunteer Coordinator, Lares Feliciano! Lares is in charge of scheduling thousands of volunteer shifts throughout the Festival to make sure our operation runs smoothly. We couldn't put on the world's largest LGBT film festival without the help of over 400 community volunteers!

Mosquita y Mari

There’s nothing like a “bad girl” to make both your heart race and your grades drop! For shy and responsible Yolanda, the intrigue around the tough, possible-future-drop-out Mari starts out innocently enough.

Here's what Lares has to say about the film:

I have been looking forward to seeing Mosquita y Mari since I first saw the film’s Kickstarter campaign a little over a year ago. Rarely in prevailing media do we see honest representation of the young queer woman’s experience and even more rarely do we see representation of young queer Latinas. This film gives voice to an experience so often left out of mainstream consciousness and it does so honestly and poetically.

Mosquita y Mari is the subtle whisper of two young women coming into their sexuality amidst the harsh reality of urban Huntington Park, Los Angeles. It is a beautiful story that does not sensationalize first love but rather reveals all the complexities and struggles implicit in non-traditional romance. It is a tale that is as sad as it is inspiring, as warm as it is cold. I love Mosquita y Mari and am so excited for the Frameline community to experience this bold and breathtaking film!

Mosquita y Mari is screening Saturday, June 16 at the Victoria Theatre and Monday, June 18 at Rialto Cinemas Elmwood.
