Wanted: gay-friendly Imam to do my Nikah

October 07, 2011
Separation of church and state is a big issue here in American gay communities. Some folks want to be married at city hall, others in front of their local congregation. But when talking about where same-sex marriage would be appropriate, we’re often talking about Christian or Jewish marriage commitments, glossing over the struggles of practicing Muslims in the gay community. But LGBT filmmakers are opening the conversation a bit. You can start with Frameline Voices short film Act of Faith, available to watch for free on YouTube or Vimeo. Three men talk about the struggle of gay Muslims in an enlightening snapshot of gay Muslim life here in Frameline’s hometown of San Francisco. A son of an Imam, a gay man who has turned away from his religion, and a community leader discuss their relationships with Islam, the Koran, and their sexuality. People around the world have been watching this film – here’s an abbreviated list of where: Australia Brunei Canada Chile France Germany Hungary Jamaica Netherlands Philippines Saudi Arabia South Africa United Arab Emirates United Kingdom USA
