Frameline Voices: The Bond

September 16, 2011
http://vimeo.com/24575306 “Who will love my child?” That’s director Michael Connell’s biggest fear after learning his son, Sean, was transitioning to his daughter, Mikayla. Many LGBT films feature interviews with parents of LGBT people. But how often have you seen a film project made by a parent in our community? In The Bond, Michael doesn’t gloss over the hard parts of his relationship with Mikayla and talks candidly about his struggle to mourn for his son and celebrate his daughter. Not everyone has a PFLAG poster parent – and Michael doesn’t pretend to be the perfect dad. But the raw honesty with which he tells his story can appeal to parents and children, no matter their relationship. And besides our immediate relationships, The Bond makes us dream of a world where the only fear our families have is whether we’ll find love.
