Hit So Hard

Sunday, June 19 at 3:30PM, Castro Theatre The description: P. David Ebersole splices archival footage—including rare clips of Kurt Cobain, Courtney Love, and their daughter Frances Bean—with new interviews to tell the story of out drummer Patty Schemel, her time with Hole, and her struggles with addiction.

Why Alexis thinks you should see it:

There is a 13-year-old version of me, wearing a plaid shirt and jumping on my dad’s karaoke machine to sing “Doll Parts” that would love to simply watch an entire film that reminds me of the awesomeness that was the grunge band Hole in the early-mid 1990s. The amazing thing about P. David Ebersole’s Hit So Hard is that it is so much more than a look back on a one of rock’s most influential bands of the era. The seeds of grunge are in the archive footage that dominates this film, including amazing footage of Kurt Cobain, Courtney Love, Eric Erlandson, Melissa Auf Der Maur, and, of course, Patty Schemel, the talented drummer at the center of the documentary.

Patty’s tale follows an arc that is sadly quite familiar in the world of rock—talented musician rockets to great heights, falls into a dangerous relationship with drugs and alcohol, and falls hard. Patty is forthright, honest, and completely fascinating to watch—you truly couldn’t ask for more in a documentary.
