H.P. Mendoza's musical Fruity Fly (Frameline33) returns to the Castor Theatre tonight and tomorrow. Here's what the Chronicle had to say:
The 93-minute film is pure Mendoza: Wrapped in a raunchy script, '80s synth-pop and colorful characters is an insightful exploration of gay and Asian identity - and of the Castro itself....
Here's more about the film, from the Castro Theatre's website:
From H.P. Mendoza, writer, composer and star of Colma: The Musical comes this infectious and charming San Francisco songfest. L.A. Renigen plays a Filipina performance artist who arrives in the city and moves into a Mission District artists' commune. There, she is welcomed into a world of colorful characters, rent control, public transit, one-night stands and other heartbreakingly familiar San Francisco mainstays, all celebrated in a lyrical chorus of clever wit, whimsical choreography and catchy hooks.
Fruity Fly plays Wednesday, August 11 and Thursday, August 12 at the Castro Theatre with the following showtimes: 2:30, 4:45, 7:00, 9:00. A Q&A with cast & crew will be held after the 7pm show both days!
